EDITOR'S NOTE: This story has been updated to clarify information on how the miscalculations happened.

Homeowners in Hubbard may have an unpleasant surprise on their property tax bill for the second half of 2024.

A real estate specialist at the Trumbull County Auditor's Office has confirmed with 21 News that due to a miscalculation in property tax rates for Hubbard, residents had underpaid in the first half of their property taxes.

The exact miscalculation is unknown, but the Auditor's Office says the amount not collected is equal to about $190 per $100,000 in property value.

The Auditor's Office tells us this was because while the school levies had been included in the valuation, they had been miscalculated meaning residents had underpaid on their taxes.

These missing funds will be collected along with the rest of the property taxes for the second half of 2024. This applies to residents of both Hubbard City and Township.

The real estate specialist says this was an unfortunate error that does not happen very often and she does not remember the last time something like this happened.

Hubbard Township Trustee Rick Hernandez tells 21 News that trustees will be looking into the mistake.

The real estate specialist told 21 News this error was on the auditor's office end and was not caught until it was too late. The Auditor's Office will also be evaluating this error to see how it can be prevented in the future.

Property taxes for the second half of 2024 will be due on September 9. There is no word on whether or not Hubbard residents will get an extension due to the error. In the meantime, homeowners can get an idea how big a hit they'll be taking by going onto the county auditor's website.

"Put your name in the search box and pull up your property. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and you'll see your first half tax and then you will see the increase of your second half tax," Hernandez told 21 News.
