Ohio has recorded nine of the 162 Salmonella cases linked to recalled cucumbers, with most of those cases in the Columbus area.
The Ohio Department of Health reported five cases in Franklin County, and one case each in Marion, Montgomery, Union, and Wood Counties.
The ages of the six females and three males infected range from 1 to 80 years old. There have been three hospitalizations and no deaths reported.
The Centers for Disease Control reported 54 hospitalizations nationwide with cases reported in 25 states and the District of Columbia.
However, the CDC cautions that the outbreak may not be limited to the states with known illnesses, and the true number of sick people is likely much higher than the number reported because many people recover without medical care and are not tested for Salmonella.
The recall involved Florida grown Fresh Start cucumbers sold in bulk to retail distribution centers, wholesalers, and food service distributors in the below14 states, but these sellers may have shipped between May 17 and May 21 to additional states or re-packaged them for stores.
Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.
The recall does not include English cucumbers or mini cucumbers. The CDC says the recalled cucumbers should no longer be in stores.
