Voters in Columbiana County will once again take to the polls in November to vote on whether or not to renew a 1% sales tax for the county.

A hearing was held Wednesday where the public was invited to show up and make comments for or against the renewal. County Commissioner Tim Weigle tells 21 News while no one showed up to speak for or against it, he's still optimistic the renewal will pass.

One of the reasons for that is that other commissioners prior to Weigle's time in office had told residents that if they vote to keep the tax in place, the county will not collect property tax on inside millage giving residents a bit of a break on their property taxes.

Weigle says this sales tax is nothing new for the county and has been in place for at least 25 years. The revenue collected from the sales tax goes to the county's general fund with the 1% tax alone accounting for about 70% of that fund according to Weigle.

Voters must vote on the renewal of this tax every five years.

If this tax is not renewed, Weigle says this could have a "serious impact" on the county. While commissioners do have some money stashed away in case this were to happen, some cuts would likely still need to be made.

This issue will be on the ballot for voters in Columbiana County during the November presidential election.
