Mahoning Co. Prosecutor to lobby for rest stop cameras to fight human trafficking
Mahoning County Prosecutor Gina DeGenova will provide testimony before the Ohio House of Representatives in favor of a bill that would add security cameras to rest stops across the state.
DeGenova will testify in favor of House Bill 473 Wednesday, a bill introduced by Representative Lauren McNally (D-Youngstown).
If the bill becomes law, it would mandate the installation and maintenance of security camera systems at 85 rest stops.
According to the release, the security camera idea came from the Ohio Association of Justice Women's Caucus. Prosecutor DeGenova was contacted by attorney Lori Luka, a Boardman native and member of the Women's Caucus, to talk about the initiative and its potential to deter human trafficking, drug trafficking and random acts of violence.
DeGenova, Luka and attorney Susan Peterson met with Rep. McNally about the idea and the legislation was created thereafter.
"This legislation has the potential to not only prevent crime but will also serve as strong evidence for prosecutors who are responsible for ensuring that those who violate the law are brought to justice," DeGenova said.
The hearing on the bill is set for 11 a.m. Wednesday.
