UPDATE: Youngstown Police find skeletal remains while investigating missing persons case
The Youngstown Police Department and the Mahoning County Coroner's Office are investigating after skeletal remains were found in a wooded area in Youngstown late Tuesday morning.
Investigators with the Mahoning County Coroner's Office tells 21 News skeletal remains were found in a wooded area on the 200 Block of East Dewey Avenue shortly after 11:00 a.m. Tuesday.
At this time, investigators are unsure of whether or not foul play is involved and have no information on the identity or the sex of the deceased, but a YPD report says the remains appeared to be those of an adult male.
A police report from YPD says officers were called to the intersection of Erie Street and Pasadena Avenue in reference to a missing persons case with the missing person in question being the suspect in a felonious assault case.
Police went to the location of a shot spotter activation on the date of the alleged incident, which was a vacant lot on Pasadena Avenue. The report does not specify the date of this alleged incident.
Police say while they were investigating the area, they smelled something decomposing. Officers found a chain link fence on the back of the property and on the other side of that fence was the "mostly decomposed" body.
Mahoning County Sheriff Jerry Greene had confirmed with 21 News that a K9 unit was sent to assist YPD in the investigation, but had no further information on said investigation.
21 News has reached out to detectives with the Youngstown Police Department about this investigation and we're waiting to hear back.
