The owner of an Eastside convenience store told Youngstown Police that he was victimized by 52 people cashing phony checks worth more than $54,000 in just one day.
The Check and Go Mini Mart operator on Wilson Avenue came to the YPD auxiliary office on Thursday. He told an officer that 52 people dressed in work uniforms came into his store last Friday to cash checks.
The owner says he learned later that each of the 52 checks, totaling $54,099, were fraudulent.
The checks were all drawn on the same bank from the same company in Vienna Township.
The owner says he called the company and was told that the checks he cashed were old payroll checks.
The owner filed a report with the police.
