Youngstown to join chorus of cities opposing Dominion Energy Ohio rate hike
A recent proposal by Dominion Energy Ohio has cities in the valley on the defensive - the latest of which is Youngstown.
Youngstown City Council is considering a resolution opposing a proposed 30% rate increase by Dominion Energy Ohio.
The resolution also requests that the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio to do the same.
This stems from the energy company proposing a distribution rate increase for consumers which would increase their monthly fixed basic service charge for natural gas from %43.27 to $56.31, according to a legislative packet from the city.
Other changes in the proposal include an increase to other fixed monthly distribution charges to consumers by more than $8.78 per month starting in 2025.
This would increase by as much $29.69 per month by 2032, according to the legislative packet.
Large rate increases in this service could negatively impact the city's efforts to attract new businesses, jobs and depress the housing market.
Council is also concerned this proposal will place an undue financial burden on residents.
The resolution is expected to be discussed on June 5 during the Youngstown City Council meeting at 5:30 p.m. where it could be approved as an emergency, allowing them to skip the three readings.
Youngstown is joining Warren and Girard in expressing their opposition to the rate hikes.
