SMARTS announces summer arts workshop classes
Students Motivated by the Arts (SMARTS) announced it will host 22 paired PK-12 Summer Workshops taking place over the summer.
SMARTS classes are offered in five arts disciplines—visual art, music, dance, theater, and creative writing, and the programs are structured to provide two strategically paired classes that compliment each other. For example, SMARTS From Heel to Toe is a dance class focusing on Tap, and is paired with SMARTS Understanding the Power of Movement, which explores the historical and cultural significance of dance for people all over the world.
Other classes offered this summer also include photography and design classes, mixed media, creative writing and digital stories, and prop and set design.
In addition to the K-12 classes, SMARTS will offer four classes for students aged 18 months – 5 years old that will take place during the first week of programming, and serve as an introduction to arts learning. SMARTS says the goal with these classes is to help children develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and a strong sense of imagination. These classes require one adult to attend with the student.
SMARTS Public Programming is free for all students and offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
DeAudra Edgerson, SMARTS Public Program Manager, designs SMARTS Summer Workshops and all SMARTS teachers are artists.
The workshops will be held June 10-14, July 8-12, and July 15-19.
Applications and classes are available here, and enrollment will open on May 22.
