Former Portage County superintendent who once taught in Valley takes case to Supreme Court
A former superintendent from Portage County who once taught in the Mahoning Valley is taking her case to the Ohio Supreme Court.
Thirty-five-year-old Laura Amero was sentenced to 10 years in prison in 2020 after pleading guilty to having sex with a student and attempting to have sex with another during her time at the Windham School District in Portage County.
Amero previously taught at Western Reserve and Campbell Schools here in the Mahoning Valley.
After her sentence, Amero filed an appeal challenging the length of her sentences on the sexual battery counts and the order to serve those two sentences consecutively.
Her attorneys argued for community control sanctions instead of prison arguing that Amero's conduct was less serious than other sexual battery cases claiming that the two victims "facilitated the offenses" and she acted under "strong provocation."
Her sentencing was stayed pending her appeal, which was ultimately denied in March, with the appeals court agreeing that Amero abused her position of trust with her actions and caused lifelong trauma for the victims and their families.
The appeals court found those consecutive sentences to be necessary to prevent Amero from committing offenses like this again.
Now, Amero is hoping for the Ohio Supreme Court to accept jurisdiction over and issue a ruling on her conviction.
