'Save the Deer' group wants Mill Creek Park Commissioners removed
After countless attempts to stop deer hunting in Mill Creek Metroparks, the 'Save the Deer' group sent 25 complaints to the probate office stating why they feel the board members should to be removed.
Now, Mill Creek MetroParks’ board of commissioners have to answer a series of complaints filed against them by the end of the week.
“The focus is still stopping the deer slaughter, but what they learned along the way is that the board can do better in a lot of other areas as well,” said Marc Dann, the attorney on case and former Ohio Attorney General.
Out of the 30 points in complaint, the Mahoning County Probate Court is asking for the park commissioners to give written responses to 11 points.
According to the complaint, the commissioners refused to act in, respond, or address the petition to remove director Aaron Young, even after receiving 2,500 signatures. The commissioners dismissed the petition.
The complaint also states Director Young eliminated much of the park’s programming, including summer music programs and children’s events.
“It was a great place for young families to take their kids, and that programming was important. Virtually all of it has been cut, and really without explanation,” said Dann.
Dann says even though the park commissioners are appointed, the group hopes the case will push the park’s board to consider the opinions of the community and take accountability for their actions.
The commissioners need to respond within 14 days of receiving the letter from the county's probate court, which means they need to provide responses by the end of the week.
21 News reached out to the Mill Creek Board, and director Young. They say they are unable to speak on the case until they hear more from their lawyers.
