At Youngstown State University work is underway to improve the seating at the Beeghly Center. A university official told 21 News the seating in the venue has stayed the same for nearly five decades.
Throughout the summer renovation crews will be removing the old bleachers on both sides of the facility, as well as replacing the existing red seats on the lower level with new ones that are equipped with cupholders.
"We've got about 1,000 seats down at the lower level, and those will all be replaced with new chair seats. We've got about 2,000 or so of the bleacher seats that will all be replaced with much nicer bleacher seats. They will be comfortable [and] they won't be the hardwood planks," John Hyden, YSU facilities associate vice president said.
The project costs $2 million and is being funded solely by private donors.
The new seating arrangement will hold a little over 4,000 people.
People who plan to sit on the upper-level bleachers will now have back support during every event. In addition to the increased comfort, visitors will have more legroom and space between each seat and walkway.
The project is expected to be completed before the start of the fall semester.
