SLIDESHOW: Dog found abandoned in deplorable Girard home
Charges have been filed after police in Girard found a dog abandoned in a home deemed to be in deplorable condition
According to a police report, the dog was found in a home on the 100 Block of Second Street just after 6:00 p.m. Monday. Upon arrival, police found a Black Labrador that appeared to be emaciated and lethargic inside the home.
Police say the home itself appeared to be in "absolute disarray."
Neighbors told police that this situation had been going on for quite some time with the homeowner, identified as 39-year-old Lisa Drummond and another male showing up periodically to remove items from the house but always leaving the dog behind.
The neighbors went on to say it's been over a month since they've seen anyone at the house consistently.
Police spoke with Drummond who told officers she had planned on taking the dog to the pound the following day and admitted that it had been in the home for "quite awhile."
Police described the house's condition as "the epitome of deplorable" with food scraps, overturned furniture and feces covering the floor of every room. There were also holes in the ceiling and floors and a heavy insect presence.
Police say they weren't able to find the dog despite two extensive searches of the home.
One of the neighbors told police that they had removed the dog from the home. The dog was brought back to the scene and was given to Jason Cooke of the Healthy Hearts and Paws Project.
According to a post on Cooke's Facebook page, the dog is infested with fleas and very thin, but is still in high spirits despite it all and is now safe. The dog will be given veterinary care.
According to court records, Drummond is charged with one count of cruelty to animals. She is set to be arraigned on May 14 in the Girard Municipal Court.
