Case of New Castle woman accused of poisoning baby bound to common pleas court
The case of a Lawrence County woman accused of poisoning her boyfriend's one-year-old daughter has been bound over to the Lawrence County Court of Common Pleas.
The Lawrence County District Attorney's Office confirmed with 21 News that the case of 20-year-old Alesia Owens was bound over to the court on Tuesday.
Owens is facing charges of criminal homicide, attempted homicide, aggravated assault of a child and endangering children stemming from the death of her boyfriend's one-year-old daughter, Iris Alfera back in June of 2023.
Police say months before Alfera's death, Owens had been researching materials that are toxic to children such as water beads, batteries and nail polish as evidenced by her search history.
Some of Alfera's searches included phrases such as "beauty products that are poisonous to kids," "How many kids have died from eating water beads" and "What should you do if your child drinks acetone."
Additionally, a criminal complaint states that Alfera had been hospitalized months prior to her death due to ingesting multiple harmful objects like water beads, batteries and a metal screw.
