Police in Youngstown are currently investigating after police say a man accidentally shot himself with a stolen gun.

According to a police report, police responded to a home on the 300 Block of Hilton Avenue shortly before midnight Sunday night in reference to a shooting. Upon arrival, police located a man who had been shot in the lower right stomach area.

Police spoke with a witness who told police he had heard a gunshot while he was the kitchen and ran to check it out. The witness told officers he found the man sitting on the living room couch with a gunshot wound to the stomach.

The man told police he was reaching into his pocket to get the gun when he accidentally shot himself with it. Police found the gun in a drawer in the hallway and a magazine on a night stand in a bedroom.

The man was taken to the hospital where police say he is in stable condition, but had to undergo surgery.

According to the report, police also found clear baggies of a white powdery substance and white pills in plain sight. Police also say a check of YPD's index revealed the gun at the scene to have been registered as stolen.

Police were not able to speak to the man due to him needing to undergo surgery. No charges have been filed at this time.
