Youngstown woman accused of kicking son in face, hitting him with broomstick

A Youngstown woman is charged with endangering children after police say she kicked her child in the face and struck him with a broomstick.

According to a police report, officers were dispatched to an apartment on Kendis Circle on Sunday in reference to a child that had been hit in the eye.

Upon arrival, police spoke to the victim and a witness who told officers the child's mother, identified as 28-year-old Shalaina Johnson kicked him in the face and struck him with a broomstick handle all over his face and body.

Police say the child had broken blood vessels on his right eye as well as bruises and swelling by his right eye, eyebrow and cheek and the child was also experiencing rib pain and bruises on his shoulders and body.

The witness told police that there was already an open case with children's services involving Johnson. Police were able to verify this with a children's serivces employee.

When police spoke with Johnson, officers say she was "standoffish" and insisted she didn't do anything, but told police that the child had stolen $3,000 from her for the game "Roblox" and that she "handled it" but refused to elaborate on what she meant by this.

Police placed Johnson under arrest and then spoke with the child who told officers that Johnson beat him a few days prior so he ran away to his aunt's apartment in a separate building.

Police say the Johnson reported the child as missing and he was taken back to Johnson's apartment. Police went on to say Johnson went to the child's aunt's apartment and busted a window with a pipe.

Court records show Johnson is charged with domestic violence and endangering children. She was arraigned on these charges on Monday and is due back in court April 17 for a pretrial hearing.
