Struthers asking for grant money for wastewater plant improvements
The City of Struthers is requesting grant money from Ohio-based U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown for wastewater plant improvements.
According to a resolution from City Council, the city is requesting $640,000 from Senator Brown's office for an $800,000 project for wastewater treatment improvements.
Struthers Wastewater Superintendent Mark Ciccone tells 21 News a number of improvements need to be done for the city's wastewater treatment plants.
These include improvements to 13 pumps that need varying degrees of repairs including impeller replacements and rebuilt and regrown drive shafts. Ciccone says he'll need to inspect more of the pumps to see what other repairs will be needed.
Additionally, Ciccone tells us another part of the project is finishing work on the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, which monitor the data of each pump station like which pumps are turned on, basin levels, etc.
Lastly, Ciccone mentioned the replacement of four influent flow control gates.
Ciccone tells 21 News the pump repairs would cost approximately $200,000, the SCADA system would cost about $40,000 and the flow control gate replacements would cost about $400,000.
The funding for all of these improvements would come from the grant from Senator Brown's office.
21 News will provide updates on this project as we get them. Stay connected for the latest information.
