Liberty officials break ground for new hotel

After more than three years of planning, Liberty officials along with a land developer broke ground Monday for a new hotel to be built near Interstate 80.

The new TownePlace Suites by Marriott, a nearly 100-room hotel, will be built on land located right next to the old Metroplex.

Last year, county commissioners granted a 75 percent, 10-year tax abatement for the hotel, which helped encourage the developer, Steel & LIberty LLC to choose this area for the investment.

Township trustees say Liberty sits in an area ripe for properties that cater to travelers because of Interstate 80.

"For travelers traveling between Chicago and New York, we're halfway. People that stop here not only can stop here for a room, they can stop here for other amenities," said Liberty Township Trustee, Arnie Clebone.

"I just think we have a lot of stuff to offer in Liberty. We have chain restaurants coming. The Starbucks came and Chipolte came. We got a Popeye's. With the bigger development, the two new hospitals, it's just going to bring in more development," said Trustee, Greg Cizmar.

"We're always talking to people. There's other prospects, there's more land and more potential for development," added Clebone.

The developer says he expects construction to cost around $11 million.

The hotel should be ready for guests in May of 2025.
