Joey Constantine, an 8th grade student from the Lakeview School District, won the annual WFMJ Regional Spelling Bee Saturday.
The winning word was "aughts," defined as "the decade between 2000 and 2009."
Constantine will now move on to represent the valley at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C, for the third consecutive year. In 2022 Constantine placed 32nd at the national bee, and tied for 22nd place in 2023.

76 students representing public, private, parochial and charter schools across Mahoning and Trumbull county competed in the WFMJ Regional Spelling Bee at Stambaugh Auditorium. The competition is a time-honored tradition dating back to 1934.
Kent State University Trumbull Campus awarded a $2,000 scholarship to the Grand Champion, as well as $1,000 to the runner-up and $500 to the third place student.
The 97th annual Scripps National Spelling Bee will take place Memorial Day weekend.
