Former Warren police officer accused of rape indicted, new alleged victim revealed
A former Warren police officer accused of rape back in January has been indicted by a grand jury on Friday.
Former officer Michael Edwards Jr., who had serve as a police officer for 18 years was indicted on three counts of rape, three counts of sexual battery and two counts of extortion, all with firearm specifications, as well as two counts of theft in office and two counts of dereliction of duty.
During a press conference back in January, Warren Police Chief Eric Merkel said he believed this to be a one-time incident, however, he encourages any other possible victims to come forward.
However, this indictment reveals previously unreported charges, as well as at least one more alleged victim in the case with the indictment naming two total victims.
In addition to the alleged incidents on January 14 and 19 respectively, the indictment reveals that during the summer and/or fall of 2023, Edwards allegedly raped one more victim. The exact nature of these incidents are unknown.
