A jury has been seated for the trial of 21-year-old Brandon Crump, the man accused of killing a child during a home invasion in Struthers.

Officials with Judge Anthony D'Apolito's court said opening statements in the trial will begin Thursday morning.

Crump is accused of being the triggerman in the deadly home invasion that claimed the life of four-year-old Rowan Sweeney during the early morning hours of September 21, 2020.

Investigators say Crump and Kimonie Bryant went into a home on Perry Street in Struthers with plans to commit a robbery. Police say the two knew a person inside of the home, 30-year-old Yarnell Green Jr., had recently received a check for several thousand dollars in federal pandemic unemployment assistance funds.

According to authorities, Green was shot several times while trying to run away. Also shot inside the home were 20-year-old Andre McCoy Jr., 20-year-old Cassandra Marsicola, 22-year-old Alexis Schneider and 4-year-old Rowan Sweeney were all shot.

Sweeney died at the scene and Schneider could be heard on 911 tapes screaming "my son is dead."

Authorities later claimed that McCoy Jr., who was also shot that night, was later linked to the crime.

Yarnell Green Jr., who would have been a witness in the case, was later killed in an unrelated shooting in downtown Youngstown in September 2022.

Although Green identified Crump as one of the triggermen, Judge Anthony D'Apolito ruled that prosecutors can't use that evidence in Crump's trial since the defense would not be able to cross-examine him. Prosecutors say they have other witnesses who will identify Crump during the trial.

McCoy and Bryant have both pleaded guilty to charges related to the killing, but have not been sentenced yet and remain in jail.
