The victim in an accident at Ellwood Engineered Castings in Hubbard has been identified as Jawaylan Patterson.
The incident happened at Ellwood on Saturday morning.
According to a Hubbard Township police report, Patterson, initially identified as "Jay," died at the facility during a routine operation while working an overnight shift early Saturday morning.
The report states that shortly before 5:00 a.m., Jay was down in a pit when molten steel started spilling into it. A witness told police that a malfunction with the casting caused the spill.
Police say an employee yelled for everyone to get out of the way and started moving the ladle of molten steel away from workers, but Jay could not get away in time.
"ELLWOOD Engineered Castings expresses our deepest sympathies to the team member's family following this terrible incident. We are working to provide support to the family during this difficult time," said Pat Callihan, ELLWOOD Engineered Castings President.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has been notified of the incident and is investigating.
In a news release, Ellwood says it has halted operations out of respect for the team and will remain closed at least through Wednesday.
The casting department will remain closed until further notice.
