Suspect in double-fatal Warren Twp. fire enters not guilty plea, ordered to stay in jail
A man who once lived in the same Warren Township home where the bodies of two people were found after a weekend fire has been arrested.
According to Trumbull County Jail records, 73-year-old Carroll Bruton was arrested Sunday on charges including two counts of murder, two counts of arson, and two counts of aggravated arson.
Bruton pled not guilty to these charges in the Warren Municipal Court Monday morning. Judge Patricia Knepp ruled that Bruton must stay in the Trumbull County Jail without bond because he poses a risk of serious harm.
Bruton is due back in court January 16 for a risk assessment and bond review hearing, as well as a pretrial hearing.
The Ohio Fire Marshal and Trumbull County Coroner are investigating the fire at a home on Miller Street, where according to court records, Bruton once lived. Bruton's current address is listed as a Tod Ave. apartment.
Inside the burning home, firefighters found the bodies of 82-year-old Roscoe Toles and 51-year-old Etiane Whitaker.
Firefighters were dispatched to the address shortly after 3:30 a.m. Sunday and found flames pouring from the roof of the house.
Neighbors reported that two people may have still been in the home. However, the fire had damaged the home’s floors and collapsed the roof, preventing firefighters from entering safely.
Firefighters were also called from Lordstown, Champion, and Newton Falls.
The house, declared a total loss, has now been torn down.
Miller Street was closed in the area until late Saturday morning.
