During the busiest return day of the year, a fight broke out outside the Steel Valley Brew Works entrance to the Southern Park Mall.

Around 5:45 yesterday evening, police say they were escorting a group of roughly 50 juveniles and adults out of the south side of Southern Park Mall during a security detail.

The police say that as they escorted people from the mall, they saw a large circle forming around two young women who were grabbing each other's hair and striking one another. Officers told the two to stop fighting and used pepper spray on both suspects.

One of the two women allegedly fled the scene, and had to be put into handcuffs by police officers. Both girls claim that the other started the fight.

One of the girls was taken to the hospital with no visible injuries after the fight, and the other was released to the custody of her mother after being treated by the Boardman Fire Department on the scene.

The other girl has been arrested for assault, disorderly conduct, obstructing official business, and resisting arrest.

As an officer was attempting to enter the mall to assist in breaking up the fight, 18-year-old Kadyn Shelton (pictured below) allegedly blocked the officer's path.

According to the police report Shelton would not move from the entrance of the mall, which did not allow the officer to go into the parking lot to assist in breaking up the fight. After being told repeatedly to leave the officer says that he tried to physically escort Shelton out from in front of the doorway.

Shelton then allegedly struck the officer, and began to run away after being told he was under arrest. The officer gave chase, and placed Shelton under arrest.

Shelton is currently in jail, and has been charged with assault on a police officer, obstructing official business, and resisting arrest. He will appear in court on Thursday.
