A 68-year-old Youngstown woman has died after getting stuck underneath a car that hit her in Austintown.
The crash occurred behind the Chase Bank in the Weston Center plaza on Mahoning Avenue in Austintown Wednesday afternoon when police say a woman, identified by a family member as Gina Seelbaugh was walking through the parking lot when she fell down and got hit by a car.
According to Austintown Police Lieutenant, Tom Collins, preliminary investigation revealed that Seelbaugh either had a medical emergency or simply tripped and fell before getting pinned under a car backing out of a parking spot.
Police say Seelbaugh was stuck under the vehicle and crews had to pull her out from under it. She was taken to the hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries.
Lieutenant Collins tells 21 News that during the rescue process, the vehicle collapsed back down on a medic and Seelbaugh, so officers along with nearby bystanders had to lift the vehicle up to rescue them.
At this time, police say there were no signs of impairment and describe the incident as simply a "freak accident."
"At this time it looks like it's just a freak accident. It's an unfortunate thing just before the holidays that this occurred. The thing is the guy wasn't speeding. He was only pulling out of the parking spot doing two to three miles per hour per witnesses," Lieutenant Collins said.
21 News crews on scene observed evidence markers in the parking lot around where Seelbaugh was hit along with a jacket laying in the road. The area was taped off while police investigated.
