Following a high-speed, head-on crash that involved one Columbiana family, authorities in Pinellas County, Florida have charged 22-year-old Leosvany Arias Roman with felony murder, vehicular homicide, two counts of aggravated assault on law enforcement, burglary of an unoccupied conveyance, resisting officer without violence criminal mischief, grand theft motor vehicle, reckless driving with property damage or personal injury, fleeing to elude highspeed and driving with a license canceled, suspended or revoked.
This comes as 52-year-old Ron Solvesky was killed following the crash that occurred on Skyway Bridge in Florida.
Roman rammed his car, a stolen Ford Mustang, into two HCSO vehicles before speeding away and onto the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, where he collided head-on with an UBER.
According to a report, the fleeing car also ran into a Florida State Trooper’s car that attempted to stop the Mustang on the Skyway Bridge.
Police say the Mustang turned around and rammed the trooper’s cruiser before continuing to drive away at high speeds along I-275 before colliding head-on with a Dodge Caravan carrying three passengers from Columbiana.
According to the organized GoFundMe, the family was in Florida to visit relatives. The accident occurred after leaving the airport.
Ron's wife, Staci, and son, Hunter sustained life-threatening injuries. Staci's current condition has not been confirmed but Hunter is expected to survive. The UBER driver of the mini-van, a 33-year-old man from Florida also died in the crash.
A second suspect, Muhammed Ali Pujol was arrested attempting to run over a Hillsborough County Sheriff's deputy with a silver Mercedes Sedan. Pujol was parked next to 22-year-old Leosvany Arias Roman of Hialeah, Florida when officers attempted to arrest him.
Pujol was charged with aggravated assault on law enforcement, fleeing to elude high speed, resisting an officer without violence and driving with a license canceled, suspended or revoked.
The incident involving the Solveskys closed the southbound lanes of I-275 until 6:40 AM.
Ron worked for the South Range School District. South Range Superintendent Jarred Zapolnik told 21 News that grief counselors are available for staff and students in the district.
Zapolinik said that Ron was, "a phenomenal person and dearly loved."
"This tragedy has shaken our tight-knit community," Zapolnik said. "Ron was beloved, hard-working, and just a phenomenal person. He would do any job asked of him. Even if it was tough, he was going to get the job done. He was a family man and would do anything to serve himself and the community."
The accident also left the staff at Shepherd of the Valley in Poland reeling. Staci owns South Range Hair Studio near the care facility. Every holiday season she does something special for the less fortunate. This year she chose the nursing home.
"We're just crushed by the news," said Lisa Slipkovich, Activity and Volunteer Director at Shepherd of the Valley. "She's just such a wonderful person, you can just hear the light in her voice through the phone. We were going to have a nice large group activity with our residents, obviously holiday-themed, and have refreshments and desserts, and she was bringing a total of about 80 to 85 gifts, which meant that every single one of our residents was going to receive a gift."
"We are taking this very slowly," Zapolnik added. "We will continue to collaborate with the community and we are taking it one day at a time. We rallied together and collaborated with local pastors and counselors to triage a crisis team and intervention team. There's a lot of support for the family."
The family's adult daughter was not on the trip.
Family members have set up a GoFundMe to help with funeral costs and medical needs for the Solveskys. The total reached $30k+ by Friday night.
