Officer cited in two-vehicle crash in Hubbard

A Hubbard Police officer has been cited for his role in a two vehicle crash that heavily damaged the other vehicle near Sunoco on Youngstown-Hubbard Road Friday. 

According to a police report, the officer driving the cruiser was en route to a call for service, and at the time of the crash, the cruiser did not have overhead emergency lights or sirens on. After failing to yield to oncoming traffic when conducting a left turn, causing the collision. 

Officer Christopher Moffitt was cited for failure to yield when turning left.

According to the report, the driver of the second vehicle was driving at 40-45 MPH, and had just begun to slow for the 25 MPH speed limit sign, which she had passed prior to the accident. Her unsafe speed is listed as a contributing circumstance.

However, the report states that due to how late the cruisers turn was, it is unlikely, but possible, that a lower speed would have entirely avoided the impact. 

Pictures taken by 21 News crews on scene show moderate front end damage to the cruiser, but heavy front end damage to the other vehicle. The two damaged vehicles are pictured below.

The officer was transported to the hospital, and according to the report, had to receive stitches in their head due to a laceration.
