Tonight, officers from Canfield and the Youngstown Drug Enforcement Agency are mourning the loss of one of their canine counter parts.

According to a Facebook post from the Canfield Township Police Department, K-9 Nix has passed away unexpectedly.

An earlier post from the department says Nix was transported to Metropolitan Veterinary Hospital early this morning and has been diagnosed with Bloat.

He underwent emergency surgery.

Nix has been serving Canfield since 2020.

During his first year on the force, Nix helped investigators discover nearly seven pounds of cocaine mailed to a home on Youngstown’s West Side.

After Nix gave an indication that narcotics may be in the undelivered package, the postal inspector obtained a search warrant to find out what was inside.

According to court documents, agents found 3,095 grams of cocaine, which is equivalent to 6.8 pounds.
