Decision 2023: East Palestine Mayor Trent Conaway reelected
Voters in East Palestine chose to retain Trent Conaway as their mayor.
Conaway captured 792 votes compared to Allison's 605 on his way to reelection.
The landmark mayoral election comes nine months after the Norfolk Southern train derailment that drew the attention of the country.
Mayor Conaway said his top goals are working on communication issues as well as continuing to hold Norfolk Southern accountable for the cleanup of the village. He also wants to work on rebuilding the village park, working with the fire department on the training center and calming the fears of residents who are still uncertain about the aftermath of the derailment.
Mayor Conaway said he's "very satisfied" with the cleanup effort from the train derailment, saying the only issue he had was the train tracks being put down over contaminated soil, which was resolved quickly.
Conaway said he is very concerned about residents who are relocating and experiencing health issues.
"We've been told by numerous agencies that there's nothing to worry about, but yet some people still could have some issues. We're working with the CDC, the Ohio Department of Health and our county health department trying to get answers for those people," Conaway said.
