Prosecutor's office opposes parole of convicted Youngstown murderer
The Mahoning County Prosecutor's Office has objected to the release of convicted murderer Shawn Rozier.
According to the release, Rozier, 48, is serving a 28-year to life sentence for the murder of Kristi Gardner.
Rozier and two women, Maria Rivera and Gardner, traded stolen clothing for crack cocaine. On December 16, 1995, Rivera and Gardner were left alone in Rozier's apartment on West Philadelphia Avenue in Youngstown, where they stole back some of the clothes they had traded with Rozier.
The two women then took the clothes and traded them for more crack cocaine from another drug dealer.
According to the release, Rivera and Gardner went back to Rozier's apartment during the early morning hours of December 17. After learning what the two women did, Rozier forced them into his apartment, assaulted them with a gun and held it to Rivera's head, threatening her.
Rozier then put the gun to Gardner's head and shot her. After the shooting, he forced Rivera to drag Gardner from his apartment to an empty garage across the street where he shot Gardner again.
Rozier shot at Rivera several times as well, but she was able to escape.
Youngstown police found Gardner still alive and followed a blood trail to Rozier's apartment across the street. He answered the door and ran after seeing officers.
Police found blood, a bloody mop and bucket, and a revolver inside.
Gardner died from her wounds on December 22, 1995, and Rozier turned himself in on January 11, 1996. He was convicted on charges of murder, tampering with evidence and felonious assault with a firearm specification.
Since being incarcerated, Rozier has 18 rule infractions, with 13 happening in the last decade. They include bringing drugs into prison and disobeying orders.
His parole hearing is scheduled for November.
