Warren looks to hold problem landlords more accountable
For months, members of Warren city council have been fielding complaints from renters in the city - everything from poor living conditions to rising rent.
Some even say they've been threatened with eviction if they complain.
At-large councilwoman Helen Rucker called a meeting of the health and welfare committee - which she chairs - Wednesday afternoon.
She and first ward councilman Todd Johnson say many of the complaints have come from people living in two apartment complexes - Stonegate off Tod Avenue and the other a high rise just off of 422.
A staff attorney from Youngstown suggested Warren get a court ruling established that any out-of-state landlord who tries to evict a tenant has to include a copy of the building's registration with the city for the eviction to go through.
While nothing got decided at Wednesday's meeting, Rucker told 21 News that's one of a couple options the city will take under advisement.
"The other one is the local landlords who may have had problems in the past," said Rucker. "How we can get to them faster and resolve those issues before they wind up in court? If we have to change some of our fees to make that more possible, put more people on the street to do inspections, we'll do that."
