Local defense attorney reminds Ohio gun owners of federal law ahead of possible cannabis legalization

If Ohioans vote yes on Issue 2 on Nov 7, using marijuana recreationally will be legal or all adults 21 and older. All except for gun owners, that is.
Defense attorney, Brian Kopp, of Betras, Kopp & Markota, LLC, said if a gun owner uses marijuana, even within Ohio's state laws, it could lead to federal charges and the loss of Second Amendment rights.
"All federal restrictions on gun ownership and ammunition will remain in place regardless of what the Ohio voters do," Kopp said.
Future gun owners should be mindful of how they answer questions on the ATF Form 4473 used to conduct background checks. Although marijuana use would be lawful in Ohio if Issue 2 is passed, marijuana would still be classified as a schedule one controlled substance and us unlawful under federal law.
Kopp says its important to be truthful when applying to become a registered gun owner.
"When you are filling out an application to become a gun owner or purchase it [a gun], you need to be truthful in those documents," Kopp said.
Violators of the law could face up to 15 years imprisonment and a fine north of $250,000.
