Youngstown man accused of storing loaded gun near children in vehicle
A Youngstown man was arrested in Trumbull County Sunday afternoon after police say they found a loaded gun stored near his two children in his vehicle.
According to a police report from Liberty Township PD, police pulled over a vehicle driven by 29-year-old Arlix Batista Hernandez for an expired registration.
Upon conducting the traffic stop, police repeatedly asked Batista Hernandez whether or not he had any weapons in the vehicle, which he repeatedly denied. Police also say he repeatedly asked officers to cut him a break and let him go home.
Police say once Batista Hernandez was placed in the cruiser, he was once again asked if he had any weapons in the vehicle and this time he replied that he did. Police say he told officers he initially denied having a weapon because he was nervous and knew he had a warrant out for his arrest.
Upon searching the vehicle, police found a handgun covered by a sweater on the backseat floorboard. Police say the gun was loaded with 13 live rounds. Additionally, police say they found another magazine in a holster containing an additional seven live rounds.
Police say two children, aged two and four years old respectively were in the backseat crying at this time and that all weapons and rounds were located between the two children.
Batista Hernandez was booked in the Trumbull County Jail and is charged with carrying concealed weapons, having weapons under disability, improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle and two counts of endangering children.
