Columbia Gas warns customers of fraudulent checks being mailed to customers

Columbia Gas customers and non-customers alike in the Mahoning Valley should be on the lookout for a fraudulent check from scammers posing as the company.

The company posted an alert on its website warning customers of a scam involving a fraudulent check being mailed to Columbia Gas customers with a letter detailing what to do with the check once it's been received.

The letter claims to be from "Steven George from the Payment Department" and demands the recipient not to throw the letter away even if they are told to do so and to email the address posted on the letter with updates on the status of the check.

Anyone who has received these fraudulent letters is asked not to obey the instructions and instead contact 1-800-344-4077.
