A Youngstown man is now without a car or phone charger, after police confiscated both of those things that he allegedly stole from two Boardman businesses.

Boardman Police were dispatched to a gas station on on Boardman-Poland Road Sunday night for a reported theft.

A store manager told police that a man, identified as 23-year-old Tyler Penwell, took a white phone charging cable from the store and put it in his pants. He left the store without paying for the charger, according to police.

Penwell was parked outside the gas station in a 2017 black Chevy Equinox when officers confronted him about the theft. Police observed the white charging cable on the front seat of the car. Penwell admitted to stealing the charger.

According to police, the Equinox Penwell was in had no license plate, and Penwell had no valid drivers license. Penwell initially told officers the car belonged to a friend. Upon further investigation, police discovered that the car had previously been reported stolen from a nearby dealership.

Penwell was arrested and is charged with breaking and entering, felony theft, and possessing criminal tools.

After his arrest, witnesses told police they had heard that Penwell was bragging about stealing the Equinox, and that he had stolen a dirt bike the day before.
