Wellsville residents discuss improving local government
River Valley Organizing is bringing the Wellsville community together in hopes of making a change.
The organization held a community meeting Wednesday to discuss the process of local government, with hopes of getting everyone on the same page. Several city council members were in attendance, learning with community members.
"Always the major disconnect I've seen within towns is that nobody knows how local government works," said Jamie Nentwick, RVO's environmental organizer. "As a result of that, there's rumors, there's people arguing over something that neither side is actually clear about."
Upon speaking with residents, the organization found a gap between the municipality and residents. RVO strives to bridge the gap between the two, giving a place for open communication.
Residents were able to voice their concerns about the village and explain what they would like to see, with responses ranging from wanting more things to do outdoors, to more local businesses and cleaning up the community.
At a previous meeting, residents raised concerns over safety. As a result, RVO is working on getting a safety committee up and running.
The committee is going to work with local leaders to make a plan to fix issues that have been long ignored, Nentwick said.
The organization wants to build a better future for generations to come.
