Masury man arrested after police standoff at apartment
An overnight standoff with police from several agencies ended with the arrest of a Masury man.
Officers from Brookfield, Vienna, Hubbard, and Sharon surrounded an apartment at Lucy and Nicholas Streets early Wednesday after a woman said the man living there shoved a 45-caliber pistol into her stomach, hit her in the face, and pushed her down while allegedly trying to take her purse.
Police say that for more than an hour, they tried to convince 58-year-old Gary Hackett to surrender.
The 36-year-old woman, an acquaintance of Hacketts, told police that there were several guns in the apartment.
After calling Hackett on a loudspeaker and a phone, police say they had guns trained on Hackett when he finally came out of the apartment with his hands up.
After handcuffing Hackett, officers searched the home where they found two shotguns and a handgun.
Hackett admitted drinking alcohol and smoking cocaine before the incident and later trying to grab the woman’s purse, according to police. Hackett told investigators he was just trying to get his money.
Police took Hackett to the Trumbull County Jail where he awaits a Thursday court hearing on charges of assault, using weapons while intoxicated, and obstructing official business.
