Resounding cheers soared throughout the gymnasium at Cardinal Mooney High School Friday afternoon as past and present cardinal football players celebrated the school's first state championship in 1973.

The win marked the first state championship for Mahoning County and a proud moment for everyone.

During the celebration, the school hosted a pep rally to honor the alumni members of the football team. 

The 1973 team beat Warren Western Reserve 14 to 3 and secured the state championship trophy. Over the past 50 years the school has won a total of seven state championships. 

The alumni players will be honored during the halftime show of the Mooney vs Villa Angela-St. Joseph game starting at 7 p.m.
