FUNd Feast honors Quaker Steak & Lube founder, helps local programs
It was the biggest year yet for one fundraiser in Downtown Sharon that aims to help a variety of organizations and programs in the area.
The event is hosted by the Meszaros Charitable Foundation, honoring the legacy of one of the founders of Quaker Steak and Lube by giving back to others.
The seventh annual FUNd fest is more than just delicious food and good tunes.
"We're just trying to carry on the spirit that he continued," explained Brian Wallace, Board President of the Meszaros Charitable Foundation.
The event is one of Sharon's largest that honors the legacy of Gary Meszaro's, one of the founders of the original Quaker Steak and Lube.
A portion of the event funds will help complete Moe's Riverwalk, stretching to Budd Street and eventually towards the Silver Street Bridge.
"The Moe's Walk is nice for people to come down and see in Sharon and relax," explained Rachel Meszaros, Gary's daughter, "But its mostly about helping others is what our main goal is."
The event aims to reflect what Meszaros loved doing in his life, including helping and supporting others' success and making the community better.
"We sold hundreds of tickets," Meszaros added. "Multiple businesses buy full tables of tickets. So we get a lot of support from all the other companies."
"Gary is one of those benefactors that people didn't know about," Wallace added. "He was that anonymous donor. So we want to continue what Gary has always done."
Sharon's robotics team is one of many groups the event benefits. The extra dollars help fund the program's trips.
"Getting there, we had to raise quite a bit of funds and the Meszaros Foundation through this event from last year was able to donate money towards our programs and help us get to where we needed to go for our programs this past year," explained Dave Tomko, Robotics Supervisor with the Sharon Robotics Team.
"We're forever grateful for it," said Naima Allen, an incoming 9th grader at Sharon City Schools. "It's amazing that we can know we can rely on the community, giving back to the community and bringing back STEM and really trying to show off what we have."
"We've been able to learn about the different types of energy and how it's transferred and more," said Anthony Gaggini, an incoming 9th grader at Sharon City Schools. "Even getting to meet face to face with different people who are sponsoring us is incredible."
Attendees living through the spirit of Meszaros through their support of the event.
The organization also gave $50,000 to community members in need during the COVID-19 Pandemic.
