Fire crews were called to an Austintown McDonald's restaurant Monday morning after a bug bomb was set off in the facility.

21 News spoke to Mahoning County Public Health (MCPH) Director of Environmental Health, Colton Masters who tells 21 News that MCPH was notified of the incident shortly before 8:00 a.m. Tuesday.

The incident occurred at the location on North Canfield Niles Road, which is attached to a gas station.

According to Masters, the reason the bug bomb was set off was to control "flying fruit fly kind of insects" in the building. Masters told 21 News he could not speak to how many insects were in the building at the time.

Masters is reminding business owners and employees that bug bombs should never be used in a commercial facility and if you have a bug problem at your business, you should instead contact a licensed commercial pesticide applicator to take care of the problem.

Health inspectors were at the scene speaking with employees about the situation according to Masters.

Masters tells is the restaurant has discarded all food inside and will not be allowed to prepare any more until the restaurant is fully cleaned.

The restaurant appears to have reopened as of Monday afternoon with 21 News crews on site reporting cars going through the drive thru and customers going in and out of the store.
