A stray dog rescued from a storm sewer on Youngstown's Northside is being taken to a veterinarian.

A woman living on Carlotta Avenue investigated when she heard sounds of distress coming from the street. She followed the sounds to a curb and spotted the dog in the drain.

The Mahoning County Dog Warden and Youngstown Firefighters were called to the neighborhood and rescued the pup.

The Dog Warden tells 21 News that the frightened animal had long claws, so he believes it is likely a stray.

The dog was limping badly and will receive veterinary care.

It's not known how the dog got into the sewer.  The dog warden surmises that it may have run there because it was frightened, or was carried away during this morning's heavy downpour.

One neighbor told 21 News that he has made a complaint to city officials about the large drain opening on the curb.
