Pennsylvania Governor, Josh Shapiro has announced on Thursday that Norfolk Southern has reimbursed Darlington Township over $500,000 for road repairs.

The railroad company reimbursed the township for a total of $554,700, which is the estimated cost to repair East Palestine Road, which was damaged as a result of the East Palestine train derailment.

In total, Governor Shapiro, Senator Bob Casey and Darlington Township's Board of Supervisors has secured more than $1.2 million for the township from Norfolk Southern following the derailment.

Governor Shapiro says his administration is still making sure they hold Norfolk Southern accountable for the derailment's damages to the community.

"The entire cost of this derailment and its impact on the commonwealth must be picked up by Norfolk Southern, not the people of Pennsylvania. This critical funding will help Darlington Township repair a vital roadway and continue to rebuild following the derailment," Shapiro said.

Last week, Governor Shapiro announced that he had delivered $1 million from Norfolk Southern to communities in Western PA to assist with community relief with $340,000 of that money going towards Lawrence County.

The Shapiro administration is still conducting environmental testing in areas impacted by the derailment to ensure the safety of the people, animals and agriculture in the region.

The PA Department of Agriculture announced two weeks ago that samples from crops in Beaver and Washington Counties showed no contamination stemming from the derailment.

Those impacted by the derailment who are interested in applying for reimbursement may do so here.
