A 61-year-old Warren couldn’t convince a jury that it was not him, but his son who stole half a dozen motorized scooters and sold them for scrap.

The Trumbull County Prosecutor’s Office says Antonio D. Cleveland Sr. turned down a plea deal, only to be found guilty of theft.

Cleveland was charged last year for allegedly stealing six electric scooters from outside an Elm Rd.  NE convenience store where members of the public were able to rent them.

The thief didn’t know that the scooters, valued at $15,000, were equipped with GPS trackers which led the owner to a Youngstown scrap yard, where authorities say Cleveland had sold them for $27.

Only five of the scooters were found and they had already been destroyed.

Cleveland took the stand in his own defense, claiming that the crime was committed by his son, who shares the same name as Cleveland.

Jurors took about two hours to deliberate after a one-day trial.  Cleveland wasn’t in the courtroom when the jurors delivered the guilty verdict on Monday.  Instead, Cleveland was arrested the following morning.

Cleveland could face a year in jail when he is sentenced.
