No charges expected after veteran grave markers, flags returned to Bazetta cemetery
Police in Bazetta Township say they will not be filing charges now that they have recovered more than 400 American flags, Veteran emblems, and holders stolen from Hillside Cemetery earlier this month.
The items were recovered on Thursday, July 27, one week after the flags were reported as missing.
A news release from police say that officers have interviewed the person of interest, and after reviewing the case with the Trumbull County Central District Court, prosecutors have decided not to file any charges.
The statement reads in part:
"The entire incident was a lapse in communication between several organizations. These organizations rely on volunteers to help them achieve the goals of their organizations. This incident should serve to help improve the communications between the groups and volunteers to prevent incidents like this from occurring in the future."
The flags and markers have been returned to the local American Legion which places them at the graves of military veterans.
