Over the next decade, as many as half of the vehicles on the road are expected to be electric, according to the International Energy Agency.

That's not only going to mean a major shift away from gasoline but also a whole new set of skills needed for everything from maintenance to repairs.

Mahoning County Career Technical Center has partnered with AVI OnDemand for a three-day electric vehicle workshop from July 24 - July 26.

The workshop showcases hands-on diagnostics and repair techniques, specifically working with high-voltage vehicles.

"We're seeing all sorts of new technology every three years,"  Tom Rayk, AVI training director said. "It's very important to go ahead and start your training right now."

MCCTC staff says that the local teachers taking the course are able to take what they learned at the workshop back to the adult and high school students.

Jim Jarvis, MCCTC training and employment coordinator calls this "cutting edge training," saying "We're going to see more and more electric vehicles on the road, and as that happens, more and more need to be repaired, maintained, and things of that nature."

AVI trainers say one of the most critical aspects of these workshops is to teach proper safety precautions.

"As long as we go ahead and follow the correct safety protocols and such, there shouldn't be anyone that is hurt. In fact, these cars are as safe to work on, if not safer than gasoline-type cars," Rayk said.

And the workshop isn't just for up-and-coming mechanics. Those who've been in business in the valley, are also looking to upgrade their services.

Victor Yancar from Westside Tire & Service in Niles said he was most excited to see how EVs are made and operate, and how they can be diagnosed.

Yancar said that right now, not many places in the area know the major failures because they aren't too common in the Valley.

He also said that learning more EV skills will increase services at local mechanic shops, and in turn help customer satisfaction.

After completing the workshop, attendees are eligible to earn their ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification in electric vehicles.
