Habitat for Humanity to rebuild Struthers woman's handicap ramp after June car accident
At the end of June, Susan Gadzia's handicap ramp was destroyed when a car plowed into it. Now, just over 3 weeks later, Habitat for Humanity is building her a new one.
According to a release from Habitat for Humanity of Mahoning Valley, their attention was brought to the incident last week.
“I knew we had to do something, and thankfully we have some loyal volunteers who are skilled at building ramps,” said Habitat Executive Director David Redig.
Volunteer Tony Nasrallah put together a plan and purchased the necessary materials, using anticipated American Rescue Plan funds from the State of Ohio.
“I know we have funding on the way specifically allocated for repairs, but this was an immediate need to make sure Susan can get out of her home,” Redig said.
Redig also added that while Habitat of Mahoning Valley doesn't currently have a dedicated repairs program, the upcoming ARP funds could make that happen.
“Once this state funding is released, my goal is to try and bring as much of it here to the Valley as I can,” Redig said. “We are looking at ways to make that happen, which could lead to an ongoing ramp program in the future.”
Habitat plans to start work on the ramp Monday, and hopes to finish by the end of the day.
