The State Fire Marshal is looking for the cause of a fire that broke out late Friday at a Warren high-rise apartment building, injuring three people.

Dispatchers were told that there was a fire with people possibly trapped at the Elms Apartments on Plaza Avenue NE shortly before 11 p.m.

When firefighters arrived, flames could be seen on the balcony of a second-floor apartment.

Crews went inside, searching for anyone inside the burning apartment and helping other residents trapped because of the smoke.

Firefighters rescued the apartment tenant as well as two neighbors.  All three were taken to a hospital for treatment.

"This could have been much worse had it not been for the building's sprinkler system," according to Warren Fire Chief Ken Nussle. "The sprinkler system saved this occupant's life."

Damage was limited to the area around the apartment that caught fire.

According to Nussle, it's unclear if the fire began on the inside or the outside of the apartment.
