Joey Constantine, a 13-year old Lakeview student, completed 5 rounds at the Scripps National Spelling Bee before being eliminated in round 6, mistaking the "e" in the word "peridium" for an "a."

Constantine had advanced to the round after correctly defining the term "schlock," moving forward to the 6th round alongside 55 other students.

Constantine won the Annual 21WFMJ Regional Spelling Bee on March 11th, and was sponsored by WFMJ to advance to the National Spelling Bee taking place in National Harbor, Maryland.

The 6th round took a heavy toll on the contestant pool, with more than half of the competitors being eliminated.

Only 21 of 56 students advanced past the 6th round out 231 original competitors. According to official competition results, Constantine finished tied for 22nd place, 10 spots better than his 32nd place finish in last year's bee.

Another valley student, 14-year old Shaylynn Dennis of Lisbon, was also eliminated in the 6th round.
