Parents are being asked to make sure their children don’t take a dip in Youngstown’s Northside Pool before its scheduled opening date next week.

President of the Youngstown Lifeguard Academy Kevin Tarpley announced on Facebook that some children jumped the fence to go swimming earlier this week.

Tarpley says it happened just 30 minutes after he had finished super-chlorinating the pool, a procedure using strong chemicals to prevent the growth of bacteria and algae.

Experts say swimmers need to wait several hours for the chemicals to dissipate before entering a pool that has been “shocked”.

After the pool opens for the season on Monday, the hours will be from 1 to 8 p.m., daily.
