Youngstown man charged with shooting neighbor's dog, house in alleged fight with his brother
A Youngstown man is charged with injuring animals, discharging of a firearm within the city, and improperly discharging a firearm into a home in the 400 block of Wesley Avenue Saturday.
Police arrested Julius Thomas, 33, around 10:11 pm after being called to a West Side home after receiving multiple calls over a fight, gunfire, gunfire at a residence, and a dog that was shot.
Police arrived to find the resident of the home cradling her pet pit bull in her arms, and screaming for police to get an ambulance.
According to the police report, blood-spattered was observed throughout the floor inside the home. The woman told police that the dog was sitting on the floor in front of her couch when she heard gunfire and a bullet came through her wall and struck her dog in the lower rear portion of the dog's body.
The report stated that the dog appeared alert but was clearly shot.
The report added that it appeared that a bullet came through the side wall of the home, then went through the dog and into the couch, and exited the back of the couch. The woman took the injured pet to an emergency animal hospital in Akron.
Police went to the home next to the shooting and spoke with Thomas, who told that his brother and an unknown male came to his residence to fight.
Thomas told police his brother and the unknown male arrived in an older silver model Chevy Malibu.
According to the police report, the two exited the vehicle and began to approach his front porch. Thomas stated that when the unknown male pulled his hoodie down over his face and started reaching for his waistband, when Thomas pointed a rifle at him, and said to move his hands away from his waist.
The report stated that the unknown male instead started to run up onto the porch, and Thomas opened fire with a 5. 56 M-15 Arma-Lite rifle.
Thomas' brother and the unknown male fled the scene in the Chevy Malibu. Thomas told police stated that he shot the vehicle and radiator fluid was found in the driveway.
Thomas was arrested and charged for shooting two rounds into his neighbor's house and for shooting her dog.
Officers discovered seven spent 5.56 shell casings on the front porch and driveway of Thomas's house. The shell casings were collected.
Thomas was booked into jail and is due in Youngstown Municipal Court at 1:30 pm Tuesday.
