West Federal Street between Market Street and Phelps Street will be closed for two weeks beginning this week.

Starting Monday, April 24, the street will be closed for approximately two weeks for a crane replacement related to the 20 Federal Place Remediation and Redevelopment project.

Last week, workers began taking down an awning on the front of the building as they started renovations on the sixth and seventh floors.

The city received a $6.9 million remediation grant with a completion deadline of June 30th of this year.

The estimated total cost of the 20 Federal Place project is around $96 million dollars. The city has also applied for a historical tax credit which could earn the project anywhere from $5-8 million.

If the city is successful in earning that, there will be an additional $10 million given at the federal level.

20 Federal was once the Strauss Department store for decades until 1986 and then the Pharmor drugstore in 1988.

Detours will be posted for the West Federal Street closure.
